Barclays Female Founder Accelerator 2023 member
Unicorn Orange
Unicorn Orange is an agency that champions brands on Amazon. Our competitive edge is the volume of data we compile through our own APIs and third-party APIs to perform analysis through our dashboards.
This, along with our combined 35+ years of Amazon experience, makes us true experts in our space and allowed us to achieve triple digit growth consecutively in our first two years.
Why did you apply for the Female Founder Accelerator?
Looking for experience and support in taking my business to the next level. Any help in preparing accurate forecasts for the future would be extremely helpful.
Do you think there's a need for programmes like this for Female Founders?
At this stage yes, I've not seen many female programs, but this question can be better answered once I've completed the program!
Why did you want to start your business?
I previously worked for two large corporations and the red tape and lack of flexibility was something I didn't enjoy - I always knew I wanted to run my own business. COVID offered an opportunity where I could use the skills I learnt whilst at Amazon to create my own agency.
What are you looking to get out of this programme?
Help with future planning
Which entrepreneur inspires you the most and why?
Sara Davies - she remains down to earth despite her success. She also comes across firm, but not aggressive, which for a woman in particular, is an important balance to strike.
What has been your biggest win in your entrepreneurial journey?
Being nominated by Amazon for the performance growth award. We were just one of four agencies in the entire UK (which consists of several hundred) to be nominated. For our success to be recognised by Amazon themselves was a huge privilege.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Managing the hiring pipeline in line with new clients coming. It is a challenge to hire at the right time to ensure profitability is protected, but also not hinder growth by hiring too late. Finding the right people is also a struggle given the skills we require are niche.
Where did you go for business advice and how did it help you?
My business partner and occasionally my dad.
What drives you to make your business a success?
The future! I am working to build a business that will allow me to provision for the future to support myself and my family.
What advice would you give other founders thinking about starting their own business?
Consider a business partner. I tried many ventures before Unicorn Orange and they all failed (for various reasons!). One key learning, however, is that doing it on your own is hard and having a partner has made a huge difference. Having someone to bounce ideas off and share the burden has made life much less stressful!
