Why did you join the Barclays Black Founder Accelerator?
The journey as a Solo Founder can be lonely. Having the audacity to believe you can solve a problem through innovation is a step that requires support from a community of audacious, likeminded individuals. I believe the Barclays Black Founder Accelerator will provide me with a community of peer and expert mentors to learn from.
Why did you want to start your business?
Many people originating from the African continent, myself included, have found it difficult to achieve weight management goals while enjoying their favourite African foods. Out of the 318,000 health apps, none contain detail extensive insights and resources on the nutritional properties of African foods as well as recipes and meal plans to suit an African pallet.
What would be your desired outcome from this programme?
To gain a support network of Founders and experienced leaders, connections with potential funders and capacity building.
Which entrepreneur inspires you the most and why?
I’m inspired by Nikki Michelson, the Co-Founder of Ohne app. Similar to me, she had an “unconventional” non-business background having worked in the International Development space. However, she’s managed to build a successful tech start-up.
What has been your biggest win in your entrepreneurial journey?
Validating my concept through an initial period of community building and customer engagement. Best Body Africa has a community of over 40,000 people across social platforms and through a mailing list who are interested in digital African nutrition solutions prior to even launching our app.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Operating as a solo founder.
Where did you go for business advice and how did it help you?
I go to peer mentors who are also Founders, experienced Founders and watch YouTube videos from Founders and funders who provide expert advice.
What drives you to make your business a success?
My business is my calling and as the saying goes, you don’t choose your calling; your calling chooses you. My passion for solving a problem I myself face keeps me going. I’m also motivated by the keen interest from strangers in the solution.
What advice would you give other founders thinking about starting their own business?
Validate the market! Make sure there is a genuine interest for the solution you are providing. Make sure your solution is not only solving a problem for a wide market base but also a problem you are desperate to solve.
