Mentor's bio
My name is Alistair Williams, and I am the Food & Drink Theme Lead, working as part of the CTO Office at NMIS (National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland) to facilitate, and de-risk innovation for F&D companies as they evolve towards Industry 4.0.
I graduated as an industrial chemist and retrained as a manufacturing engineer. I started working at ABB instrumentation, where I was fortunate to be part of the future leaders, development programme. I achieved my undergraduate and post graduate qualifications whilst working, and have held various executive, non-executive & trustee positions.
Before joining NMIS, I worked for Macsween, the haggis maker, as their operations director and I have worked as an executive board director for 20 years.
My executive & entrepreneurial experience has been gained through running, growing, and selling my own start up. Experiencing a startup where I was the chairman fail and contributing to several successful SME business turn arounds.
I have a passion for personal, team and organisational development. The ups and downs of financial environments and challenges associated with commercial management haves given me a breadth and depth of commercial, financial, and business management.
Typically I have worked in environments with not enough time or money; I understand the challenges that present in the real world and how to evaluate situations to identify & focus on that which matters most. I am smart, enthusiastic and love seeing entrepreneurs, learn, fulfil their goals and ambitions and flourish, which is the reason I enjoy mentoring and find it so fulfilling.
