Key steps
- Create an action plan: Now is the time to act. Having identified the areas of environmental and social impact you need to find ways to reduce or eliminate them. Every business is different so find solutions that are practical for your startup. You can start small, for example by reducing electricity consumption or increasing the use of video conferencing over business travel.
- Set targets and goals: Being able to measure improvement is imperative. It allows you to then set targets and KPIs.
- Remember timeframes: Setting clear timescales will help you monitor performance as you grow the business. Be careful not to keep delaying putting your plan into action.
- Define responsibilities: Accountability here is key. Nominate a green workplace champion, who will help drive sustainability in the business.
- Ensure communication is maintained: Be sure to celebrate progress and share your progress with broader stakeholders. The more engagement, the more likely you are to succeed.
- Remember the iterative process. Sustainability is an evolving area and your strategy should reflect this.
Sustainability will only become more important in the future: to customers, investors and employees. Whatever stage of growth you’re at as a business – the time to act is now.
