Why did you join the Barclays Black Founder Accelerator?
To elevate Spectrum to the next level (and beyond); learning from those who have already made their businesses a success.
Why did you want to start your business?
To bring about equality, greater representation and most importantly inclusivity to the events space. To contribute to my profession in a way that aligns with my personal values.
What would be your desired outcome from this programme?
Right now, we're ready to scale. I would like to understand how best to do this and implement a strategy which takes us there.
Which entrepreneur inspires you the most and why?
It's a really tough call but I'm greatly inspired by Sharmadean Reid. I've watched her trajectory for such a long time and how she's adapted her businesses in line with a long term vision which hasn't wavered.
What has been your biggest win in your entrepreneurial journey?
My biggest win has been finding my tribe (network) early on and leaning into opportunities which make me uncomfortable - Being accepted onto this is definitely up there!
What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge has been knowing what to focus on at the right time, I've made many mistakes and can see in hindsight what I would do better but with each learning beings about more that I don't know.
Where did you go for business advice and how did it help you?
I went to my network and other mentors in the industry. I've participated in startup courses, most of this has helped me to become more focused on one thing at a time rather than the many things I would like the business to accomplish. I have also learned to be discerning about advice, 85% of it excellent but I have also learned to trust what I instinctively know too.
What drives you to make your business a success?
Little Lauralee drives me, the little girl / older girl / woman who believed for a long time that this wasn't for her and that she'd be "better off" in a "secure" job. My daughter, who I want to show what's possible when you bet on what you believe in and know to be right.
What advice would you give other founders thinking about starting their own business?
Get very clear on why and when. The how will come, align yourself with other business owners who are way ahead and also only a few steps ahead. Keep learning, growing and innovating. Identify what you can do and what you should pay someone else to do. (Not paying someone to help you in your business does not save you money or time)
