Why did you join the Barclays Black Founder Accelerator?
Participating in this initiative excites me because ‘I don’t know what I don’t know’, and it exposes Founders like me to excellent, innovative business insight, improving our service offering and amplifying our social impact.
Why did you want to start your business?
Being in a professional role within the Construction Industry has provided me with an excellent opportunity to develop myself in countless areas. However I am aware of how many people from a similar background to myself are either unaware these roles exist, or leave the industry due to racism. I want to create a professional practice which serves as a portal for aspiring Black Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers to be able to enter the industry, and flourish without having to deal with the burden of racism. Imagine the professionals they could become if all they had to focus on was being good at their chosen profession?
What would be your desired outcome from this programme?
Improved business acumen, find new accountability partners, strengthen my network, secure Barclays as a Client.
Which entrepreneur inspires you the most and why?
Marcus Garvey who instilled the belief in his 6 million supporters that we could be the owners and makers of any industry we applied ourselves to. Many of the legendary individuals and groups who established strong economies within Black communities have openly stated Marcus Garvey as their first inspiration.
What has been your biggest win in your entrepreneurial journey?
Starting!
What has been your biggest challenge?
Financial Management.
Where did you go for business advice and how did it help you?
The Black Founders Hub helped me to become comfortable with sharing my wins and losses on my business journey with the others in the cohort. It helped me to realise that my challenges were not insurmountable, as others in the group had perserved and succeeded in similar circumstances.
What drives you to make your business a success?
My daughter. My younger siblings. And just knowing that this is something I am fully capable of doing.
What advice would you give other founders thinking about starting their own business?
Invest in your network, as in the difficult periods they will be the ones that help pull you through.
