Leg 9: Bristol to Jersey

Tuesday 23rd May, Jersey held their ‘Barclays Round Britain 2017 Voyage’ Port Day onboard The Lord Nelson in St Helier Harbour.

During the morning they were joined by many of the Jersey disabled buddies and their families plus representatives from 10 local charities. In the afternoon they were joined by approximately 30 Local Corporate and Premier clients who were all keen to get a peek onboard.

Guests enjoyed refreshments and canapés in the sunshine on deck while they leant about the RBV and Jubilee Sailing Trust. They heard first hand from disabled and able bodied crew who had just sailed the ship to Jersey from Bristol – all of whom were excited to share details of their experience. Guest were then treated to exclusive tours of the ship, stopping by our Eagle Lab, Lifeskills and Accessibility stands on the way round where we were able to demonstrate how Barclays positively influence the way people view disability and show how Barclays and others are leveraging digital and cultural innovation to address some of those issues faced by those with a disability.

Between these events all Jersey staff were invited to explore the ship and see how the amazing Lord Nelson has been specially adapted to cater for many sailors with special needs. This gave them a real sense of what life onboard is like and just how their many colleagues who are participating in this adventure really are helping to change the lives of their buddies.

The entire day was a huge success and many guests commented on how their eyes had been opened to the struggles faced by individuals with disabilities. How simple things many of us take for granted are huge challenges to others. Several charities and clients are already making plans to visit our Eagle Lab or share details of our accessibility capabilities with people they know whom could benefit. The ship has now set sail for Poole with its next crew, including our very own Captain Paul Savery, all of whom will no doubt have many more salty stories from the high seas to share on their return.
