EnergyTech Framework
Help shape EnergyTech: Partner with us
Do you want to be part of the EnergyTech programme and help define it? The programme is seeking partners to participate in its development, and is supported by:
CodeBase, the largest tech incubator in the UK and experts in practitioner-led peer support, community building and tech investment
Opportunity North East, driving transformational change in north east Scotland’s economy and developing and delivering projects to accelerate regional economic diversification and energy transition
Starting in January 2021, our 12-month virtual programme of modular learning and collaboration opportunities will assist transformation efforts in the energy sector by providing insights, training and connections with Barclays clients across multiple industries - from some of the very largest companies in the world to some of the smallest but most agile and innovative.

Why now? Why Barclays?
Many in the energy sector are taking action to help address the need to overhaul the world's energy infrastructure and to develop newer, cleaner energy sources. This will require trillions of dollars of investment.
But in addition to money, transformation on this scale will require radical innovation.
Barclays believes different ways of thinking, working and creating have a vital part to play in reimagining the future of energy.
Why? Because we’ve seen this before. The financial services industry has undergone, and is still undergoing, huge change. Barclays has learnt first-hand how to innovate effectively to:
- Experiment and explore, both internally and with partners
- Deploy new innovation models and technologies
- Collaborate both in co-development and outside of Barclays with, for example, partners in the world of FinTech
Barclays has benefited enormously from the experience. Now we think there's a real opportunity to do the same in the energy sector.
Who it’s for
EnergyTech is designed for established energy companies, startups and investors. We’re not limiting who can participate but you’ll likely be a senior staff member in one of those types of companies, perhaps with a job title such as Senior Director of Innovation, Head of Corporate Ventures, Director of Technology or Chief Digital Officer, or be a founder of a startup in the energy sector.
How it works
We deliver the EnergyTech programme through two initiatives:
"Big companies can’t buy. Small companies can’t sell."
We're looking to change that.
Bridge
EnergyTech Bridge is where the world's energy companies and the UK's most promising startups come together.
We understand how hard it is for energy firms and startups to work together in a meaningful way. Bridge makes it easier. It challenges the problems and focuses on building new products through a series of meetups involving experts from CodeBase, Barclays and guest speakers from our global network.
Key features:
- Monthly workshops led by specialists
- Fast learning
- Collaboration to develop new propositions
- Understand the tools and gain the confidence and knowledge to face industry disruption
Example insight: We know that, to work effectively with startups, big companies have four choices: they must either buy, build, partner or invest. This subject is just one we explore in Bridge.
Bridge workshops include:
- Project vs. product: Projects come to an end and have a maintenance period, right? Startups don’t think this way. They constantly iterate and improve their product.
- Cohort Theory and culture: Our way to understand different types of companies, based on when they formed and their relationship with software. With Cohort Theory, you can develop narratives around technology innovation and use that language to build new partnerships.
- The Stack: All tech companies understand where they sit in the Stack - at the bottom manufacturing chips, or further up the Stack building experiences and services. We explore what the EnergyTech stack looks like.
- Jobs To Be Done: Describes how consumers really make choices about the products they buy. It's why some innovations succeed where others fail.
- Digital Twins: We discover the new opportunities that Digital Twinning present and explore new connection points with the rest of the tech ecosystem.
- Platforms and Widgets: Some of the most successful software companies are platforms. They allow startups to build products on top of them. By creating an app marketplace on your product, you can access and create new business models and opportunities.
- Open Source: Co-developing IP with others outside your organisation might sound unintuitive but, by harnessing the power of a community, it can bring significant benefits. Open Source is the dominant model across the software industry.
"If the size of your failures isn’t growing, you’re not going to be inventing at a size that can actually move the needle… Amazon will be experimenting at the right scale for a company of our size if we occasionally have multibillion-dollar failures."
- Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon
Gateway
As well as driving new product development by innovating like a startup, companies also need to consider risk differently. It’s no good creating a new proposition if senior management veto its release because it might fail.
EnergyTech Gateway helps you redefine your company’s change model and risk attitude by understanding how startups are built and how venture capitalists (VCs) work with those companies to develop compelling products.
Key features:
- Corporate mentorship
- One-on-one, half-day virtual workshop led by experts
- Individually tailored to your organisation’s needs
- Answers to the difficult questions about the realities of industry disruption
- Analysis of the playbooks and strategies used by high-growth, venture-backed companies
Example insight: We know that product development strategies, partnership models and company culture are areas that must be addressed if corporates are to get the most out of their collaboration with startups. We’ll share our experiences from other sectors, so that you can upskill and your company can benefit from your new knowledge.
