Imagineering a Startup

Method: hypothesize > a/b test > conclude > repeat

Matthew Sedgley - Service Assurance Manager at Barclays, Bournemouth

"When people discuss startups they tend to talk about inspiration and creativity. This leads founders to believe they can imagineer a solution to any problem they’re trying to solve. In reality, executing a startup is a balance between creativity / intuition / instinct and the scientific method: hypothesize > a/b test > conclude > repeat."

As the year draws to a close and thoughts turn to 2017 it's worth taking stock of what progress has been made in the last 12 months. For many of us, immense personal and professional challenges will have been conquered during the last 8,760 hours.

On January 1st, 2016 Eagle Labs family stood at just 2 sites. Cambridge Cherry Hinton with its maker space, large teaching area and dedicated electronics room, and Bournemouth with a mix of office spaces, hot desks and maker equipment. The a/b testing was underway!

Fast forward to 19th December, and that a/b test > conclude > repeat process has been running constantly and produced 7 further sites. Cambridge Cherry Hinton and Bournemouth have been joined by Brighton, Chesterton Road Cambridge, Birmingham, Notting Hill Gate, Norwich, Salford, and Jersey. It's safe to say the family has grown quickly!

Since January 1st we've welcomed more than 34,000 visitors through our doors across our 9 locations. We've sent 6,000 tweets, cycled over 500 miles raising money for four charities. Helped our Digital Eagle family with Code Playgrounds, and Tea and Teach sessions. Given our colleagues, and customers some amazing #makespecial moments including custom sign writing for shop windows, a football ground tour for a colleague going above and beyond the call of duty and who could forget Rilee with her prosthetic hand.

Most importantly we've nurtured 78 fledgeling businesses providing the infrastructure for 148 people to make the next steps along their startup Journey.

For the fledgeling businesses we are supporting through our Labs December provides a good time to review progress and re-assess goals. Is your business making progress? What is holding you back from taking that next step? How can we help you?

If you've never visited an Eagle Lab, get in touch and we'll be more than happy to show you around, and probably offer you a mince pie!

We've got big plans for 2017. If you think we should open a Lab in a particular area of the country, then get in touch. We'd love to hear from you and your passion for creating amazing business spaces.
