The Barclays Round Britain Voyage 2017 (#RBV2017) was a complete circumnavigation of the British Isles by the Lord Nelson - which is operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust and is one of only two Tall Ships in the world that have been specifically designed to meet the needs of physically disadvantaged sailors.
The Voyage started and finished in London and, as the Lord Nelson sailed around the UK, it called into 10 different ports. Each of the eleven legs consisted of 19 Barclays colleagues each of whom operated as a buddy with a physically or mentally disadvantaged sailor who had been nominated by more than 50 separate charities.
The aim of the project was twofold:
- to positively influence the way that people view disability – to build awareness and understanding across communities, businesses and employers
- to show how digital innovation can be used to address some of the challenges and opportunities faced by those with a disability – using work undertaken in Barclays Eagle Labs as an example:

The Digital Eagles
The Digital Eagles were created in 2013 to align with Barclays’ mission in becoming the most Digitally savvy workforce in the UK.
The Digital Eagle community has grown to over 20,000 colleagues in just four years. The Eagles first supported the older generation get online with our Tea & Teach sessions, helping our customers and the wider community feel more confident on the ‘world wide web’ while having a cuppa and a chat. We then introduced 7-17 year olds to coding through the relaxed and fun environment of Code Playground, aiming to provide children with the skills and knowledge they will need for the future.
Since then we have helped over 1 million people get online and in 2017 we are dedicated to helping people stay safe and protect themselves online.
